Car insurance, as in the UK, is mandatory in Spain
The law in Spain requires that you must have at least third party insurance. Many younger people in Spain do drive around with no insurance so the police make constant checks in order to rectify the situation and make roads safer.
The Guardia Civil now have the technology to check a driver's insurance details once they have been pulled over. Fines for not having insurance can range from around 600 euros up to 3,000 euros depending on the type of vehicle you are driving, whether it is a business or private vehicle and how long the driver has been without insurance.
